What it is
AI (artificial intelligence) is technology that lets computer systems analyze large amounts of data, learn from it, and perform tasks that used to require human thinking: recognizing speech and images, generating text, and making decisions based on patterns. AI doesn't "think" like a human — it finds statistical patterns in the data it was trained on and applies them to new requests. In short, what is AI — a set of algorithms that learn from data and perform tasks that used to need a person. In web development it's usually a specific tool for a specific job, not a "smart assistant that replaces a team."
Where AI is used in web development and marketing
- Chatbots and customer support. Automatic answers to common visitor questions, 24/7 — see our article on 24/7 chatbots for the difference between rule-based and AI-powered bots.
- Content generation. Text, images, or video as a starting point for further editing — not a finished end product.
- Analytics and personalization. Product recommendations, user behavior analysis, demand forecasting.

Generative AI and analytical AI aren't the same thing
When people say "AI," they usually mean generative AI — the kind that creates new content: text, images, video. A separate category is analytical AI, which doesn't create content but finds patterns in existing data: forecasting demand, sorting leads, suggesting product recommendations. The difference matters in practice: generative AI saves time on creating materials, while analytical AI helps make decisions based on data a person couldn't process by hand in a reasonable time. If it's specifically about video, that's a slightly different tool — more in the AI video term.
How much does it cost to add AI
The price depends on what exactly gets built. A ready-made chatbot or content generator built on an existing API costs an order of magnitude less than a model trained specifically for one business with its own knowledge base. Most small and mid-sized sites do fine with off-the-shelf tools — they launch faster and don't need a dedicated support team. A pricier custom build is only worth exploring once the volume of repetitive requests is genuinely large and automation saves real hours of human work, not just looks modern.
What's important to understand
AI is a tool, not a replacement for expertise. A good result requires framing the task correctly, checking the output, and human oversight at every step. Blindly trusting AI output without review is a common mistake that can hurt a business — inaccurate content, made-up facts, or bad recommendations. AI works best where there's a clear review step: someone who signs off on the result before it reaches a client or goes live on the site.
