⚡ Quick take
A 24/7 chatbot is an automated assistant on your website that answers visitors at any hour, even when everyone on your team is asleep or off for the weekend. It suits small businesses for common questions (pricing, hours, order status) — it hands off complex cases to a human instead of trying to fully replace one.
A visitor lands on your site at 11pm on a Sunday with a simple question — and leaves for a competitor because nobody answers right away. A chatbot solves exactly this problem: it doesn't replace a person, it closes the gap when no person is physically available.
What a 24/7 chatbot is
A chatbot is a window on your website that automatically holds a conversation with a visitor: answers common questions, shows pricing or business hours, takes a request. "24/7" means it works without breaks — at night, on weekends, on holidays — exactly when a live team member is usually unavailable.
Why small businesses need one
- Zero missed inquiries. A visitor gets an answer right away instead of hours later or the next business day.
- Less repetitive work for the team. The same questions ("how much does it cost", "how do I order", "what are your hours") get handled by the bot — people can focus on harder tasks.
- A better first impression. A fast reply, even at night, signals to the customer that they won't be forgotten.
How it works: rules or AI
There are two main approaches. The simpler one is a rule-based bot ("if the customer typed X — show Y"), predictable and cheaper to set up, but it doesn't understand questions phrased differently. The second is a bot built on AI, which picks up the meaning of a question even in free-form wording and gives a more accurate answer instead of just matching a keyword. Most small sites are fine with the first approach covering a handful of the most common scenarios — an AI-based bot makes sense once you get a lot of questions that vary a lot in wording.

When a chatbot is genuinely worth it
If your business gets the same questions from customers over and over, gets inquiries outside business hours, or your team simply can't keep up with replying fast — that's where a chatbot actually earns its place. If inquiries are rare and each one is unique, it's simpler and cheaper to keep direct human communication — a bot would just add complexity there instead of solving anything.
