A chart of a website's search ranking climbing in Google results — illustration of SEO promotion

What it is

Website promotion (SEO, short for search engine optimization) is the set of actions that improve a site's ranking in Google's organic — that is, free — results for queries your target audience is actually searching for. Unlike advertising, you don't pay per click here: traffic keeps coming as long as the page holds its ranking. The difference matters: paid traffic disappears the moment you stop paying, while an organic ranking keeps sending visitors for months or years, as long as the page stays relevant to the query and technically sound.

What promotion consists of

Promotion breaks down into at least four workstreams that support each other: a gap in any one of them holds back the results of the rest.

  • Technical optimization. Loading speed, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, clean code structure, a correct robots.txt and sitemap.xml — everything that helps search bots crawl and understand the site without obstacles.
  • Content optimization. Page and blog text written for the queries your audience actually types — headings, descriptions, articles that answer the person's actual question in the search box, not just contain a keyword.
  • Internal linking. Pages on the site link to each other with relevant anchor text — this helps visitors find related topics and helps Google understand the site's structure and how to distribute ranking "weight" across pages.
  • Off-page optimization. The site's reputation in Google's eyes, built through links from other resources and brand mentions — the longer a site exists and the more authoritative sources link to it, the higher the trust it earns.

What affects rankings on Google

Several factors decide a page's ranking at once. The two that matter most are how well the content matches the query and how fast the page loads without errors; mobile usability and how much other sites trust this one carry real weight too, just usually less. No single factor wins a ranking on its own. Promotion only works as a combination, which is why fixing one item in isolation rarely moves the needle.

How long it takes

SEO isn't a one-time action or an instant result — the first ranking changes usually show up after 2-3 months, with steady traffic growth coming later, and the compounding effect builds with every month of ongoing work. That makes it an ongoing service, not a project with a fixed deadline — a site that stops promoting it gradually loses ground, because competitors in search results don't stand still. For more on the stages involved and what drives the cost, see the blog article "How Much Does SEO Promotion Cost".

How to tell promotion is working

Progress in SEO is measured with actual numbers, not gut feeling: ranking for target queries, impressions and clicks from organic search in Google Search Console, and ultimately the number of leads or calls that come specifically from search traffic. Ranking matters more than instant CTR: a page sitting at position 25-30 gets few clicks not because it's poorly written, but because almost nobody scrolls to the third page of results. Growth shows up in stages: impressions for broad queries rise first, then rankings for target queries, and only after that, traffic and inquiries. That's why it's worth judging promotion by the trend over several months rather than by any single day — small swings up and down in ranking are a normal part of the process, not a sign something's wrong.
